Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is in shock following two days of deadly attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group linked to the Islamic State. At least 89 people were killed in North Kivu province, leaving communities grieving and terrified.

The first attack occurred on Monday in Ntoyo village during a funeral. Survivors reported that ADF fighters, armed with machetes and guns, stormed the gathering, forcing mourners to assemble before attacking them. Many were hacked to death, with some reportedly beheaded, creating scenes described as horrifying by witnesses.

Violence struck again on Tuesday in Oicha, a town near Beni, where at least 18 more people were killed. Attackers reportedly mutilated victims in their homes and fields as residents attempted to flee. Authorities caution that the death toll may rise as search and recovery operations continue.

Originally a Ugandan insurgent group, the ADF pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2019. Since then, it has carried out repeated attacks across eastern Congo, exploiting the region’s ongoing insecurity. Churches, homes, and even funerals have become targets in the group’s ongoing terror campaigns.

These attacks follow a string of massacres by the ADF, including the July 2025 assault on a Komanda church that killed 34 worshippers, and an earlier massacre in Irumu that claimed 66 lives. Analysts suggest that targeting funerals is a deliberate strategy to strike civilians during moments of communal vulnerability.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the attacks in the strongest terms. He called for renewed international support to dismantle ISIS-affiliated networks operating in the region and to protect vulnerable communities.

Humanitarian agencies report that hundreds of residents have been displaced, deepening the crisis in North Kivu, where millions already face food shortages and lack basic services. Casualty figures remain provisional as authorities continue investigations and recovery efforts.
