Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has clarified the government’s stance on the recent arrests linked to the National Unity Platform (NUP) military-style parade. He emphasized that the State does not carry out abductions but only apprehends individuals who violate the law.

Speaking to journalists, Maj. Gen. Kulayigye insisted that claims of abductions are inaccurate. “There are no abductions carried out by the State; the State arrests, it does not abduct,” he stated, aiming to correct public misconceptions.

The General noted that those who took part in the unauthorized parade at the NUP Headquarters in Makerere, Kavule, will face legal consequences. He confirmed that authorities have already detained several participants linked to the event.

Maj. Gen. Kulayigye further warned that the State will continue to pursue anyone involved in organizing or attending similar illegal gatherings. He stressed that the warning had been communicated in advance, leaving no ambiguity.

The NUP’s military-style parade has triggered nationwide debate. Critics argue it posed security risks, while supporters maintain it was a peaceful demonstration. Nevertheless, the government insists that events held without official permission violate the law and will face strict enforcement.

Security analysts highlight that distinguishing between arrests and abductions is critical for maintaining public trust. By stressing legal procedures, Maj. Gen. Kulayigye sought to demonstrate the State’s commitment to law enforcement without resorting to unlawful tactics.

As the clampdown continues, focus remains on NUP and its supporters to gauge their response. The coming days are expected to show whether the arrests will deter similar actions or escalate political tensions ahead of future activities.
