Besigye’s Arrest Sparks Chaos in Parliament: Speaker Among Demands Answers As Government Stammers

Kampala, Uganda – In a dramatic turn of events, Uganda’s Parliament descended into chaos yesterday as MPs from the National Unity Platform (NUP) cornered Speaker Anita Among, demanding accountability for the shocking arrest of former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya.

The controversy surrounding Besigye’s arrest has sent shockwaves across the region, with many questioning the legality and morality of the operation. According to reports, Besigye and Kamulegeya were abducted in Kenya while attending a book launch, only to resurface in a Ugandan military court.

Ssemujju Nganda, MP for Kira Municipality, sparked the drama in the House, lambasting the government for what he described as a brazen violation of international law. “How does Uganda justify conducting clandestine operations in a foreign country, kidnapping opposition leaders, and dragging them before a military court?” Nganda thundered, his words echoing through the chambers.

The government’s silence on the matter only fueled the fire, with NUP MPs seizing the opportunity to amplify the issue. They demanded clarity on why Besigye, a stalwart of Uganda’s opposition and promoter of the newly minted People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), was subjected to such treatment.

Speaker Anita Among, visibly frustrated, initially attempted to deflect the issue, suggesting that the matter required more “consultation.” However, her hesitation only emboldened the opposition, forcing her to concede to their demands for a formal government explanation.

“This is a matter of national and international importance,” Nganda declared triumphantly. “The people deserve answers!”

In a bid to quell the growing unrest, Speaker Among directed the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs to present a comprehensive statement regarding Besigye’s arrest. However, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua cautioned that it would be premature for Parliament to condemn the actions of Kenya before a court ruling is given.

Despite this, Speaker Among emphasized the need for transparency and accountability. “I direct the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs to present a detailed statement regarding the arrest of Dr. Kizza Besigye,” she said.

“This statement should be presented without going into the merits of the case.”

As the drama unfolded in Parliament, one thing became clear: the Ugandan people demand answers, and they demand them now. Will the government provide the transparency and accountability that the people are crying out for? Only time will tell.
