“Enough Is Enough, Stop Siding With The M23 Or We Shall Cut You Off The Annual Aid” Britain Allegedly Tells Off Rwanda

The United Kingdom has warned Rwanda that its financial assistance could be reduced if Kigali continues to support the M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The UK, which provides Rwanda with over $1 billion (Sh160 billion) in aid annually, has raised concerns about the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.

A senior British official stated, “We have made it clear to Rwanda that its actions in the DRC are unacceptable. If Kigali continues to back the M23 rebels, there will be serious consequences, including a review of our financial aid.”

International Pressure on Rwanda

The UK’s warning adds to growing international pressure on Rwanda. Several Western nations, including the United States and France, have accused Kigali of supporting the M23 group, which has been engaged in clashes with the DRC government. However, Rwanda denies these allegations.

The DRC government has consistently accused Rwanda of arming and financing M23 rebels, who have seized control of several areas in North Kivu province. A recent UN report also suggested Rwanda’s involvement, despite Kigali’s repeated denials.

A spokesperson for the DRC government welcomed Britain’s stance, stating, “We appreciate any effort that pressures Rwanda to stop interfering in our country. The people of Congo deserve peace, not more war.”

Potential Economic Impact on Rwanda

The UK’s financial aid to Rwanda supports key sectors such as education, healthcare, and economic development. A suspension or reduction in funding could have a significant impact on Rwanda’s economy.

An international relations expert explained, “Rwanda is heavily reliant on foreign aid. If the UK and other Western nations cut their funding, it will pose a major financial challenge for the government.”

Despite these warnings, Rwanda remains firm in its position. A Rwandan government official, speaking anonymously, stated, “We do not support M23, and these accusations are baseless. Rwanda will not be pressured into making decisions that undermine its national interests.”

Ongoing Crisis in Eastern DRC

The situation in eastern DRC remains tense, with thousands of civilians displaced by the fighting. The UK has urged both Rwanda and the DRC to seek peaceful resolutions through diplomatic dialogue.
