In the hallowed halls of Makerere University, amidst the turmoil of protests and the pursuit of knowledge, Ssebuganda Richard, affectionately known as Sebzo, carved out a remarkable path.

His journey, marked by adversity and resilience, culminated in a momentous achievement: the conferral of a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences.Sebzo’s tenure at Makerere University was fraught with challenges, beginning in 2019 and reaching a crescendo in February 2022. During this time, student discontent over online lectures erupted into widespread demonstrations, led by the indomitable Shamim Nambassa, a former Guild President.

Amidst the chaos, tear gas and live bullets filled the air, turning the campus into a battleground. It was in Lumumba Hall, a bastion of student activism, where fate dealt Sebzo a cruel blow. Amidst the chaos, a tear gas canister found its way into his room, shattering his palm and robbing him of four fingers in an instant. Yet, from the ashes of tragedy emerged a beacon of hope and resilience.Despite the harrowing ordeal, Sebzo refused to be defined by his injuries.

Fuelled by a fervent belief in justice and human rights, he emerged as a prominent activist, fearlessly challenging societal injustices and advocating for change. His relentless pursuit of justice often led to brushes with authority, yet he remained undeterred in his mission.

Today, as Sebzo stands on the threshold of a new chapter, he reflects on his journey with gratitude and humility. His graduation serves as a testament to his unwavering determination and unwavering spirit. With his sights set on a new frontier, Sebzo has already embarked on a new journey, enrolling in a Law course at UCU with aspirations of becoming a medical lawyer.

As we celebrate Sebzo’s remarkable milestone, we applaud his resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world. From tragedy to triumph, his story inspires us all to persevere in the face of adversity and strive for a brighter tomorrow.
