Kampala Police has detained a 23-year-old male Makerere University student arrested for allegedly raping a female student at one of the Varsity’s Hall of Residence.

The suspect, a fourth-year Engineering student (identity withheld for sensitivity), stands accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old female student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in tourism at Metropolitan International University – Kampala Campus.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, confirming the incident, disclosed that the suspect purportedly committed the act on February 4 at the hall of residence, following a referral by her roommate for internship guidance.

“The accused allegedly raped the girl from one of the halls,” ASP Owoyesigyire affirmed.

Initial contact led to a meeting arranged at Makerere University Hall, where the suspect resides. Allegedly, upon meeting, he took her to his room under the guise of explaining internship procedures. Subsequently, he locked the door and assaulted her as she attempted to leave.

Following the report, Ms. Jane Namaganda, a lawyer at the Center for Health, Human Rights, and Development (CEHURD), intervened to counter alleged attempts by the suspect’s family to obstruct justice. Their intervention led to the suspect’s arrest on February 9.

Ms. Namaganda urged expedited investigation, stressing the importance of holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring educational institutions remain safe spaces, particularly for women.
