How I Finally Reclaimed My Family Land After Years of Struggle

My name is David Okurut, and I hail from Soroti, a town in Eastern Uganda. For over seven years, I was entangled in a painful and exhausting legal battle over a piece of land that belonged to my late father. This land had been in our family for generations, but after his death, a distant relative attempted to take it through forged documents and false claims. What followed was a long, stressful court process that nearly drove me into depression. I spent large sums on legal representation, lost precious time, and endured threats from people who wanted me to keep silent.

Even though I had the truth on my side, it often felt like the legal system was not. The case dragged on endlessly, and each time I went to court, the other party appeared more powerful and better equipped. I began to feel hopeless, as if some invisible force was working against me. Friends and relatives advised me to give up and move on, but I couldn’t let it go. That land was more than just soil—it was a vital part of my family’s legacy and future.
