TOP STORY!! Uganda Local Government Workers Union Demand Direct Meeting With President Over Delayed Salaries
The Uganda Local Government Workers Union has given the government a three-week deadline to arrange a direct meeting with the President. The workers say their concerns about delayed salary enhancements have been ignored for too long, and only the President has the authority to resolve the matter. If their demand is not met, they warn, a nationwide strike could follow.
Union leaders Emmanuel Gidudu, the National Chairperson, and Hassan Mudiba, the General Secretary, explained that they have already met government officials three times, but nothing has changed. They argue that ministers alone do not have the power to approve the salary adjustments. “We want to meet the President directly because our voices are not being heard,” the leaders stressed, adding that only his intervention can unlock the long-awaited pay rise.
Local government workers say they are under growing financial pressure as the cost of living continues to rise. Many believe that fair pay is long overdue and necessary to keep morale high. They also warn that without better salaries, it will become difficult to maintain key services such as health care, education, and administration in communities across the country.
The union has already written to the responsible minister, making it clear that if their demand is not met within three weeks, they will call for a strike that could paralyze services nationwide. This would affect critical areas of daily life, causing major disruptions in districts and local communities.
Observers say the next few weeks will be crucial. The government must decide whether to allow a direct dialogue between the President and the workers, while the union must keep its members united and ready for action. The country now waits to see if negotiations will happen or if Uganda could face a widespread strike in local government services.
