Bobi Wine!! Regime Using Lies and Fear to Silence Uganda’s Fight for Freedom
A recent high-level meeting in Gulu brought together members of the European Union (EU) Delegation and General Salim Saleh, the brother of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. During the discussions, the German Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Matthias Schauer, alongside other EU diplomats, raised alarm over threatening social media posts made by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba—President Museveni’s son and a senior figure in the Ugandan military.
The diplomats expressed concern that Muhoozi’s inflammatory online remarks often result in real-world consequences, contributing to an atmosphere of fear and suppression. Their unease followed a specific incident in which Muhoozi appeared to target EU representatives after their visit to the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters to discuss Uganda’s deteriorating human rights conditions.
Just hours after the Gulu meeting, the Ugandan government responded with serious allegations against Ambassador Schauer, accusing him of backing unnamed rebel groups allegedly seeking to overthrow the state. Authorities further claimed that many of these so-called rebels were aligned with NUP and its leader, Bobi Wine.
In response, Bobi Wine dismissed the accusations as false and politically charged. He described them as a calculated distraction from the pressing issues facing Uganda—namely corruption, power abuse, and human rights violations. According to Wine, such claims are part of a long-standing pattern by the Museveni administration to frame political opponents as security threats in order to legitimize repression.
He emphasized that critics of the regime, particularly NUP members and supporters, are frequently portrayed as criminals or insurgents, a tactic used to justify their arrest, mistreatment, and disappearance. Bobi Wine urged the international community to remain alert to these strategies and to continue advocating for accountability and justice.
Despite the rising tensions, Wine reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful activism. He stressed that the movement for democracy and freedom in Uganda would not be silenced and called for global solidarity with those fighting for human rights.
His message was clear: intimidation and misinformation will not deter Ugandans from seeking a just, democratic future.
