A high-ranking police officer, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nickson Agasiirwe, has made a dramatic appearance at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Nakawa under tight security. This marks a major step forward in the long-running investigation into the 2015 killing of Senior State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi, a case that has haunted Uganda for the past decade.

Though the specific charges against Agasiirwe are still sealed, court officials confirmed that his appearance is directly connected to the ongoing probe into Kagezi’s assassination. She was shot dead in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb, as she returned home from work. The brutal murder shocked the entire nation and drew strong condemnation both locally and internationally.

Agasiirwe, who once held a powerful position in the Police’s Special Operations Unit, was recently arrested after new information reportedly linked him to important events surrounding the murder. While the state has remained silent on the details, insiders from the judiciary revealed that new witness testimonies and intelligence reports may have triggered this latest development.

Inside the courtroom, Agasiirwe appeared calm but chose not to speak to the media. His lawyers strongly defended his innocence, claiming that he is being wrongly accused in a case that has lacked resolution for far too long. They argue that dragging Agasiirwe into the matter is unjust, especially after so many years of unclear investigations.

On the other hand, the family of the late Joan Kagezi welcomed the recent developments. “We’ve waited ten years. All we want is the truth,” said a family spokesperson outside the court. Their statement reflects a mix of pain, patience, and cautious hope that justice may finally be served.

The Chief Magistrate did not take Agasiirwe’s plea, noting that the case would be transferred to the High Court once the charges are officially laid out. Legal experts believe that this move could be a turning point in Uganda’s efforts to deal with serious, politically sensitive crimes. Whether it results in a conviction or uncovers more hidden truths, the case is sure to keep the nation’s attention in the days ahead.

For now, SSP Nickson Agasiirwe remains in custody as investigations continue. His next court appearance is expected within the week, and many are watching closely to see what unfolds next in this highly emotional and complex case.
