Go Back To Where You Came From!! Activist Stella Nyanzi Stranded in Nairobi After German Official Denies Re-Entry
Ugandan academic, writer, and outspoken activist Dr. Stella Nyanzi has been left stranded in Nairobi after being denied permission to return to Germany, where she lives as a recognized refugee with her three children.
Nyanzi, who fled Uganda due to political persecution under President Yoweri Museveni’s regime, says she was stopped at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on her way back to Munich. She was scheduled to fly with Etihad Airways when a German migration officer, identified only as Constantine and based at the German Embassy in Nairobi, blocked her from boarding.
According to Nyanzi, the officer claimed she did not meet the requirements for refugee status and lacked the necessary documents. However, she presented an official letter from Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), dated March 5, 2025, clearly confirming her refugee status under Article 3(1) of the German Asylum Act.
“I was shocked,” Nyanzi wrote on social media. “I am a recognized refugee living in Germany, but this official told me I am not. He ignored my valid refugee documents and refused to let me board my flight.”
As a result, Nyanzi missed her flight while her children remained waiting for her in Munich. She had already checked out of her accommodation in Nairobi, only to return from the airport in disbelief and frustration.
Now stuck in Kenya, Nyanzi says she plans to stay in Nairobi over the weekend and hopes the embassy official reconsiders their decision. Until then, she remains in limbo, separated from her family and unsure of when she’ll be allowed to return to the country that had granted her asylum.
