IS HE DEAD OR ALIVE?? Uganda Police Provides Update on Deadly Accident Involving Maj Gen Sabiiti
Maj Gen Sabiiti Muzeyi is reported to be in stable condition after surviving a severe road accident in Lwengo District on Saturday, according to Uganda Traffic Police. The incident occurred while he was returning from a traditional wedding ceremony. Maj Gen Sabiiti currently oversees Uganda’s military industrial complex.
Traffic Police spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, confirmed that the accident involved the General’s vehicle and a truck loaded with cattle. “We are still collecting details about the circumstances, but preliminary reports indicate it was a head-on collision with a cattle truck,” he told reporters.
Following the crash, a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) helicopter swiftly airlifted Maj Gen Sabiiti to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. Authorities have not yet released the full extent of his injuries, a matter that has stirred public concern.
SP Kananura, however, moved to reassure Ugandans that the senior officer is no longer in critical condition. “I will share more details tomorrow, but for now, I can confirm that the General’s life is out of danger,” he said, adding that a comprehensive briefing will be given on Monday.
Maj Gen Sabiiti is a prominent figure in Uganda’s security circles. He previously served as Deputy Inspector General of Police from 2018 until 2020, following years as Commander of the UPDF Military Police and the elite Special Forces Command, which is tasked with safeguarding the President, First Family, and strategic state facilities.
According to sources, he had attended the introduction ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni’s granddaughter, Nsasiirwe Karugire, who is preparing to wed the son of Lt Gen Sam Kavuma. The accident occurred as Maj Gen Sabiiti was traveling back from the family function, making the incident particularly personal for the country’s leadership.
When asked about accountability for the collision, SP Kananura noted that investigations are still in progress. “You cannot apprehend anyone before determining responsibility. That’s what we are working to establish,” he explained. The findings of this probe are expected to shed light on how the accident unfolded and whether any arrests will follow.
