It was an unforgettable Tuesday at NBS, where the newsroom was buzzing with more energy than a cup of strong coffee – and for good reason. Robert Kyagulanyi, .ka Bobi Wine, was due to grace the Barometer talk show, and his visit turned the usually composed newsroom into a full-on concert and party venue.

As soon as Bobi walked through the doors of Next Media Park in Naguru, reporters abandoned their desks faster than you can say “exclusive interview.” And why wouldn’t they? The man himself was there, and the journalists here—known affectionately as The Transformers—was ready to roll out the red carpet. But this wasn’t your typical newsroom welcome.

In an act of enthusiasm only seen on the big screen, suspenders-mad businessman reporter kicked things off with an impromptu song to welcome Bobi Wine.

“Wait, is this a newsroom or a karaoke bar?” one reporter joked, as everyone else joined in to belt out tunes that sounded like they could be the next political anthem (minus the off-key notes).

It was like a scene from a musical, except with more coffee spills and the occasional trip over cables.

Speaking of trips—yes, some literally happened! In the chaos of excitement, a few staffers had their own “awkward celebrity moment” as they tripped and stumbled over their own feet, narrowly avoiding a full-on newsroom tumble.

One staffer nearly broke down as his delayed moment of photo-op with Bobi was snapped when the Barometer producers dragged the NUP principal up the flight of stairs to the fourth floor ahead of the show.

Then there was this one, in particular, who almost found herself hugging the floor but somehow turned it into a smooth dance move.

“Just trying to stay grounded,” they quipped, dusting themselves off. Bobi Wine and his entourage couldn’t help but laugh as the newsroom turned into a chaotic but hilarious display of team spirit.

Bobi Wine, accompanied by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, was given a tour of the Next Media Park by the ever-calm Chief of Protocol, Desire Derekford Mugumisa.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team was still getting over the fact that their idol was strolling through their midst. It was less of a “news briefing” and more of a “news greeting,” with hugs and selfies taking over the atmosphere.

Before all this mayhem, Bobi had a quiet chat with Group CEO Kin Kariisa, but let’s be real: that part was practically a blur compared to the pandemonium that followed. The frenzy wasn’t just contained in the newsroom.

Bobi Wine’s appearance on Barometer immediately began trending across social media. The excitement was so contagious that even social media guru Kasuku was left doubting the news. Was this real? Could it be? After all, it was April 1st—Fools’ Day. A perfect day for pranks… or a perfect day for making history?

But before anyone starts thinking this was a one-off newsroom phenomenon, it’s worth noting that journalists going gaga over political figures is hardly new.

Back in 2011, the Daily Monitor newsroom in Namuwongo experienced its own version of a “celebrity frenzy” when Dr. Kizza Besigye and his wife, Winnie Byanyima, made a surprise visit. The newsroom came to a complete standstill as journalists couldn’t believe their luck.

So enamored were they by the couple that they had to be quite literally dragged away to make it to the show they had come to participate in on KFM. No one could extricate their eyes (or bodies) from KB. It was pure chaos, but also pure joy.

As it turns out, Bobi Wine’s appearance was no prank. The visit was the real deal, and the newsroom antics were the perfect buildup to what would go down as one of the most memorable Barometer episodes ever. Journalists tripping over excitement, singing songs, and laughing all the way to the cameras. April 1st will certainly be hard to top!
