Reports from insider sources indicate growing tension within the National Unity Platform (NUP) as security officials allegedly hold secret meetings to plan the arrest of party president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. According to sources, others potentially targeted include Bobi Wine’s wife Barbie, Secretary General Captain Lewis Rubongoya, party lawyer George Musisi, and several journalists who witnessed events but did not report them to authorities.

Security documents suggest that a total of 23 NUP members are on the government’s arrest list, though only eight, including Waiswa Mufubiro, have been detained so far. The remaining members are reportedly under close surveillance, with authorities closely monitoring their movements.

The alleged crackdown is linked to a military-style parade held at Kavule, which security officials claim was conducted without approval from the Ministry of Defence or other relevant government authorities. The parade reportedly caused alarm among senior Statehouse officials, raising concerns about public order and political stability.

Earlier reports indicate that days after Bobi Wine inspected the Kavule parade, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba allegedly instructed Police Inspector General Abas Byakagaba to arrest the NUP president. However, the directive was reportedly blocked after Byakagaba consulted with President Museveni and military commanders at Makindye barracks, who also declined to authorize the arrest.

Interestingly, some prominent NUP figures, including opposition leader Joel Ssenyonyi, are not on the arrest list. Sources suggest this is because Ssenyonyi was absent during the Kavule parade and therefore not directly involved in the event that triggered the government’s response.

Analysts say the unfolding situation underscores the tense relationship between Uganda’s ruling authorities and opposition parties. Though the Kavule parade may have been largely symbolic, it has escalated into a high-stakes political standoff, raising pressing questions about freedom of political expression and the scope of party activities in Uganda.

As the nation watches closely, it remains unclear how far the government will go in implementing these arrests. The developments have sent shockwaves through NUP supporters and the wider public, signaling that political tensions in Uganda are far from subsiding.
