JUST IN!! Derrick Nyeko Bounces Back Into 2026 Race, Says Bobi Wine Convinced Him
Breaking news from Makindye East: Member of Parliament Derrick Nyeko has stunned political observers by making a dramatic return to the 2026 race, just weeks after announcing his exit from politics.
Nyeko, who first entered Parliament in 2021 on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, appeared this week before the party’s Election Management Committee for vetting. His unexpected appearance sent shockwaves through the party, as many had assumed he was stepping away for good.
When journalists pressed him about the sudden reversal, Nyeko kept his comments brief, saying only, “I am here to be vetted.” His silence left many questions unanswered, but the surprise comeback quickly became the talk of Makindye East.
Behind the scenes, sources say the decision was influenced by NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. According to Nyeko, it was Bobi Wine himself who personally persuaded him to rejoin the race.
Bobi Wine reportedly emphasized Nyeko’s strong grassroots support, political experience, and influence in the constituency, urging him not to step aside. Nyeko described the appeal as impossible to ignore, ultimately prompting his dramatic return.
Earlier this month, Nyeko had disappointed supporters when he announced on social media that he would not seek re-election. He cited “deep reflection” as the reason for his decision and described his first term as one marked by service, growth, and loyalty to the people who elected him.
His initial withdrawal opened the door for a flurry of aspirants vying for the Makindye East seat. Among them were former NBS journalist Robert Sekidde, also known as Tuff B, as well as James Kayondo, Calvin Bakulumpagi, and Patience Ayesigye.
Nyeko’s re-entry instantly shifted the political dynamics. His incumbency, name recognition, and the backing of Bobi Wine significantly alter the balance of power within the NUP primaries, making the race far more competitive.
Political analysts note that Nyeko’s comeback highlights Bobi Wine’s enduring influence within NUP. The party president’s word not only changed one candidate’s decision but also reshaped the trajectory of the entire Makindye East contest.
With the 2026 elections approaching, the key question now is whether Derrick Nyeko can leverage his incumbency and Bobi Wine’s endorsement to overcome his rivals and retain the seat. One thing is certain: Makindye East is set to be one of Kampala’s most fiercely contested political battlegrounds.
