“Leadership Is Not About Buying Positions But Service, I Can’t Take Part In Corruption” Derrick Nyeko Allegedly Reveals How He Stepped Down After Being Told To Pay 150 Million For A NUP Ticket
Makindye East Member of Parliament, Hon. Derrick Nyeko, has made startling claims that the National Unity Platform (NUP) demanded UGX 150 million from him to secure the party ticket for the 2026 elections. Nyeko, who had previously announced on X that he would not seek re-election, said his decision to step down was influenced by what he described as “corrupt practices” within the party.
In a statement released on Thursday, September 4, Nyeko revealed that he was asked to pay the large sum just to be considered for re-election. “I was asked to pay 150 million shillings in order to be considered for re-election. As a man who stands firmly against corruption, I cannot take part in such practices. I believe leadership should be about service, not purchasing positions,” he wrote in a now-deleted post.
The legislator emphasized that he would rather leave politics than compromise his principles. Describing himself as “the man of no corruption, no problems,” Nyeko made it clear that integrity mattered more to him than holding political office.
Political analysts suggest that Nyeko’s allegations could spark tensions within NUP, a party that has long positioned itself as an alternative to the alleged corruption associated with the ruling NRM. If verified, these claims could stir discontent among party supporters and raise questions about NUP’s internal processes.
Despite stepping down, Nyeko urged his supporters to remain committed to honesty and integrity. He vowed to continue advocating for transparency and truth, even outside Parliament, signaling that his withdrawal was guided by principle rather than personal gain.
Nyeko’s decision leaves the Makindye East seat, one of NUP’s key urban constituencies, open to new contenders. Reports indicate that KCCA Speaker Zahara Luyirika and Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende are among those showing interest, suggesting a potential shift in the political dynamics of the constituency.
With the NUP Election Management Committee yet to finalize candidate selections, internal negotiations are expected to intensify. Nyeko’s bold stance against alleged corruption has not only reshaped the Makindye East political scene but also highlighted questions about the party’s commitment to transparency and ethical leadership.
