In a surprise move, the Minister of Youths and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, has announced that President Yoweri Museveni is set to pardon dozens of youth imprisoned for political reasons.

The announcement was made during a press conference in preparation for International Youth Day, which will be celebrated on Monday in Soroti District.According to Barugahara, the President will make a final decision on Monday, coinciding with the global celebrations.

This move is seen as a significant step towards addressing the concerns of Uganda’s youth, many of whom have been detained for participating in political protests and activism. The pardon is expected to bring relief to the families of the imprisoned youth and is seen as a positive gesture by the government.

However, details of the pardon, including the number of youth to be released and the conditions of their release, remain unclear. The development will be closely watched as Uganda marks International Youth Day.

In April this year , State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Barugahara scolded the  National Unity Party principal Robert Kyagulanyi for his “endless attacks on government” and Balaam as a person on grounds of illegally holding his supporters in prisons and now making them plead to have them released.

This was weeks after Balaam pledged to help NUP get back their missing persons and those who have spent years in prison.

“If NUP wishes to secure the release of their supporters, they must refrain from exerting undue pressure on the President,” Balaam said.

He said if NUP is to get their supporters back, they should stop pressurizing the president whom Balaam gave the list of the missing NUP supporters and will anytime free the incarcerated prisoners.

He added that only president Museveni will stand surety to some NUP supporters who were denied bail in court martial last week hence asked the NUP leadership to stop stressing with courts of law.

However, NUP secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya shuttered Balaam saying that he is only bringing shame to his office and advised him to go back and read the constitution before ever addressing the media again.

To Rubongoya, Balaam’s comments only confirmed that Uganda is stuck with a dictator who decides all without legal considerations hence the need to bring the regime to an end.

Balaam also revealed that he is currently mobilizing for issues youths find challenging which he will table in cabinet to find solutions.

“As a government official, it is my duty to address the challenges confronting our youth,”

Barugahara stated.”I am currently mobilising efforts to address these issues and will present them for consideration in the cabinet.”
