No Place For Criminals In PLU!! Gen Muhoozi Fires Katungi From PLU Following Explosive US Indictment on Arms and Drug Trafficking
In a shocking development that has sent waves through Uganda’s political and security circles, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has removed Michael Katungi from his post as Commissioner for External Affairs. The dismissal follows Katungi’s indictment in the United States for allegedly conspiring to supply military-grade weapons to one of Mexico’s most notorious drug cartels, the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).
Gen. Muhoozi, who also serves as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of Uganda, made the announcement via social media, stating, “I have decided to remove Michael Katungi as Commissioner for External Affairs of PLU. He is also expelled from our Central Committee.” This decision comes after an extensive internal investigation into Katungi’s involvement in an international arms trafficking operation that has drawn significant attention across the globe.
Katungi, a former high-ranking government official who once held key diplomatic roles, including Deputy Head of Mission at the Uganda High Commission, is accused of collaborating with international criminal networks to acquire military-grade weapons through fraudulent means. These weapons, which reportedly included machine guns and anti-aircraft systems, were allegedly meant to aid the CJNG in their illicit drug trafficking operations into the United States.
The indictment of Katungi has raised serious questions about the integrity of Uganda’s political and security systems. Once an influential figure within the government, Katungi now faces serious legal charges in the United States for conspiring to provide arms to criminal organizations. These weapons were intended for the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most powerful and dangerous transnational crime syndicates.
In response to the indictment, Gen. Muhoozi took swift action, expelling Katungi from his role as Commissioner for External Affairs of the PLU. The General, known for his prominent position within Uganda’s military and political spheres, announced the decision on social media, stating, “From now on, only the Chairman will appoint foreign committees within our movement.” This move underscores Gen. Muhoozi’s intent to tighten control over the PLU and its internal operations.
The case centers around Katungi’s alleged involvement in procuring end-user certificates (EUCs) and delivery verification protocols (DVPs)—crucial documents for the legal transfer of military-grade weapons. Katungi, along with several accomplices, is accused of using bribery to obtain these documents fraudulently, enabling the shipment of illegal arms to Mexico. The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that Katungi was a key player in the scheme, recruiting individuals to secure the fraudulent documents in exchange for commissions on the arms deals.
The indictment has placed Uganda under international scrutiny, raising concerns about the country’s potential role in global arms trafficking and its commitment to combating such illegal activities. Gen. Muhoozi’s quick removal of Katungi demonstrates Uganda’s seriousness in distancing itself from any involvement in transnational criminal networks and its determination to address the situation head-on.
