NUP CAUCUS MEETING!! Muwanga Kivumbi Says He And Other 20 NUP MPs Snubbed The Meeting Because Of Bobi Wine’s Disrespect Towards Them
Butambala County legislator Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi says he does not regret snubbing Tuesday’s National Unity Platform (NUP) parliamentary caucus meeting at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule.
Kivumbi, who also chairs the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, says there is life after Parliament and nobody can put him on pressure. He is now advising the party supporters to be part of the solution instead of destroying it.
Kivumbi says there is need to respect the old guards that have been fighting for the struggle instead of fighting and blackmailing them. He says the old guards in the Opposition have hugely contributed to the struggle of liberating this country.
The fire-spitting legislator says he can only help his party by winning for it a parliamentary seat but not being on tension on the party ticket. Kivumbi was speaking to the media at Parliament on Wednesday to respond to concerns on why he snubbed the NUP Parliamentary Caucus.
The meeting had been called by party principal Robert Kyayulanyi.Kivumbi also warned the media against trivialising the issues of the National Unity Platform, saying theirs is a serious party.
Among the notable members who abstained from the meeting are Kazibwe Bashir, Joyce Baagala, Medard Sseggona, Muwanga Kivumbi, Juliet Kakande, Abed Bwanika, Mathias Mpuuga, Michael Kakembo, Kiwanuka Abdallah, Allan Mayanja, Ssebunya Charles Tebandeke, Allan Ssewanyana, Aisha Kabanda, and Ssaazi Godfrey. Also included in the list are Flavia Kalule Nabagabe and Patrick Nsamba Oshabe.
The decision of these MPs to stay away from the caucus meeting sends a strong message about the current state of affairs within the NUP. It highlights simmering discontent or disagreements within the party, potentially foreshadowing challenges for its leadership and the advancement of its legislative agenda.
Among the issues prioritized in the meeting included, the alleged Members of Parliament that received shs100 million and paid half of it, The party resolution to recall Hon.Mathias Mpuuga from the parliamentary commission and the fights among party members in Masaka.
On Tuesday,NUP supporters were involved in a bitter dispute regarding the party’s mobilization campaigns, known as Kunga where a group of local leaders, led by Masaka city mayor Florence Namayanja, who also serves as the NUP chairperson in the area, called for a meeting to address various issues, including pronouncing themselves on party members who had defected to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political pressure group led by President Yoweri Museveni’s son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The meeting convened at the NUP party offices on Hobert Street was disrupted by a group of angry youths who accused the conveners of having selfish intentions and issuing uncoordinated statements.
A scuffle then erupted when Steven Lukyamuzi, Kimanya-Kabonera division chairperson, began reading a press statement asserting the support of all party members in Masaka for the Kunga mobilization campaign and their allegiance to decisions made by the party headquarters in Kampala.
However, the situation escalated when several youths from the audience grabbed the statement from Lukyamuzi and tore it apart, alleging misrepresentation of their views and causing misunderstandings among the party’s top leadership.
Political analysts warn that the current situation in the leading opposition party may lead to its downfall if the top leadership fails to resolve matters indoors.
