The National Unity Platform (NUP) has confirmed the arrest of Sauda Madada, an aspirant for Kampala Woman Lord Councillor and a close ally of party president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. Her detention has unsettled the party, which is already grappling with a wave of arrests targeting its key members.

According to NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, Madada was apprehended by police in Busia while attempting to cross into Kenya. When she inquired about the reason for her arrest, officers reportedly told her that her case file was at Wandegeya Police Station, where she would be transferred.

Madada, who was nominated just last week as an independent candidate for Kampala Central Woman Lord Councillor, becomes the latest senior NUP figure to be detained in quick succession. Earlier this week, the party’s deputy spokesperson Alex Mufumbiro was arrested outside Kawempe Magistrate’s Court, while musician and longtime Bobi Wine partner Nubian Li was picked up shortly after his nomination for Nakawa Mayor.

Widely recognized as one of NUP’s most influential mobilisers, Madada has for years been on the frontlines of protests and campaigns, often clashing with security forces. She has been arrested multiple times, endured imprisonment, and is regarded by many as Bobi Wine’s most trusted female organiser. Her prominence within the party has made her both highly visible and frequently targeted.

The spate of arrests comes as NUP accuses the government of orchestrating abductions and intimidation against its members ahead of the 2026 general elections. Party leaders allege that the systematic targeting of its organisers is a deliberate attempt to cripple its grassroots structures before campaigns officially begin.

Security sources, however, have linked the latest arrests to events dating back to February 2025, when NUP members were accused of conducting unauthorized military-style drills at the party’s headquarters in Makerere-Kavule. On September 8, five loyalists were charged and remanded to Luzira Prison over the same case, joining other senior members such as Eddy Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi who had earlier faced similar charges.

Prosecutors accuse the group of unlawful assembly, illegal training, and conspiracy to commit a felony under Section 45 of the Penal Code Act. Security agencies had previously warned NUP against holding any activities resembling military drills. For now, Sauda Madada remains in custody at Wandegeya Police Station, as supporters press for her release and demand clarity on the charges she faces
