Amid mounting social media pressure, Hon Joel Ssenyonyi, the new Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament, has made a bold decision to return a significant sum of money allocated to him by the Parliamentary Commission.

This revelation follows widespread leaks exposing excessive payouts to former Leader of Opposition Hon Mathias Mpuuga, certain Members of Parliament, the Speaker, and the Parliamentary Commission.Known for his outspoken stance against corruption, Ssenyonyi disclosed that he returned a substantial amount deposited into his account.

He clarified that the funds were meant to cover per diem expenses during a visit to Nairobi to see a sick MP, Mohammad Ssegirinya. However, Ssenyonyi noted that he visited Ssegirinya for only one day but received payment for five days’ worth of per diem.

Prompted by the leaking of a payment slip on social media showing that he had received 16 million Shillings, Ssenyonyi addressed the issue directly at Parliament, emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency in public office. He felt compelled to set an example by rectifying the discrepancy.

In a public statement, Ssenyonyi urged the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, to similarly reimburse any funds she allegedly received from the Parliamentary coffers.

This move by Ssenyonyi underscores the increasing influence of social media in shaping public discourse and holding government officials accountable. It also highlights the ongoing battle against corruption within Uganda’s political sphere, with citizens demanding transparency and ethical governance from their representatives.

In conclusion, Hon Joel Ssenyonyi’s decision to return the allocated funds exemplifies a commitment to integrity and accountability in public service. By addressing the discrepancy head-on and urging others to follow suit, he sets a powerful precedent for ethical governance.

This act not only reflects the growing influence of social media in driving transparency but also underscores the public’s demand for responsible leadership. Ssenyonyi’s stance signals a pivotal moment in Uganda’s fight against corruption, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and collective efforts to uphold the principles of good governance and serve the best interests of the people.
