“They Told Me To Stop Supporting Bobi Wine Or I Will Continue To Suffer” Alex Waiswa Breaks His Silence
National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has claimed that his recent arrest was orchestrated by his political rival, Nakawa East MP aspirant Michael Kabaziguruka. According to Waiswa, Kabaziguruka also serves as the chairperson of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) Electoral Commission.
Waiswa made the allegations this morning while appearing at Kawempe Magistrate’s Court in Kanyanya, where he was formally charged. He was initially arrested on Monday at the same court premises and has remained in custody under the supervision of security operatives since then.
While in detention, Waiswa said he was warned to stop supporting Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine. He claimed he refused to comply with the threats, asserting that he will continue backing the NUP leader despite pressure from his rivals.
Waiswa is also accused of participating in a parade organized by NUP at their Makerere-Kavule headquarters earlier in February. He strongly denied the allegation, stating, “I wasn’t part of the parade as I was not even around.”
On Monday, five more NUP members—Tasi Calvin (Bobi Giant), Lukenge Sharif, Nyanzi Yasin, Kaweesi Tonny, and Ssemakula Edwin—were added to the charge sheet for the alleged illegal parade. Previously, Edward Ssebuufu (Eddie Mutwe) and Achileo Kivumbi had already been charged in connection with the same event.
The court adjourned the matter to 29 September 2025, giving authorities additional time to prepare their case. Waiswa and the other accused members remain in custody pending their next appearance.
Meanwhile, Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) spokesperson Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye warned that anyone involved in the NUP parade at the Kavule headquarters will face legal consequences. The military assured the public that all participants will be brought before the courts.
