“THEY WERE DISORGANISED” Tanga Odoi Sets The Record Straight On Why Museveni’s Challengers In The NRM Presidential Flag Bearer Race Were Disqualified
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni now stands unchallenged in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s presidential race after all his would-be opponents failed to meet basic nomination requirements. According to Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, none of the challengers managed to fulfill the party’s nomination criteria.
Dr. Odoi revealed that one aspirant did not provide a nominator—an essential requirement—while another submitted only one nomination form instead of the two mandated by the party’s guidelines. Though seemingly minor, these procedural errors were enough to disqualify the candidates from the race.
As a result, President Museveni now moves forward as the NRM’s sole flag bearer for the upcoming general elections. With no internal rivals, Museveni’s path to securing the party’s nomination is clear, reinforcing his long-standing dominance within the NRM.
“The rules were transparent, and all candidates were informed well in advance,” said Dr. Odoi. “It’s unfortunate that some failed to comply, but we could not make exceptions. The process had to be fair and consistent for everyone.”
This outcome has sparked mixed reactions. Museveni’s supporters view the lack of competition as further evidence of his entrenched authority and popularity within the party. Meanwhile, critics argue that the party’s stringent nomination process may stifle internal democracy and hinder the emergence of new leadership.
As Museveni gears up for yet another national campaign, his firm grip on the NRM appears unshaken. Whether due to loyalty, structure, or lack of serious contenders, his position at the helm of the party remains secure, giving him a significant advantage ahead of the general elections.
