Veteran legislator Medard Lubega Ssegona, the current MP for Busiro East, faces a major political setback after reportedly losing the National Unity Platform (NUP) endorsement ahead of the 2026 elections. Sources within the party indicate that his name will not appear on the official list of flag bearers, a surprising blow for a man once considered untouchable in NUP’s upper ranks.

Ssegona, who has represented Busiro East under NUP since 2021, is said to have struggled during the vetting process. Party insiders reveal that he failed to secure enough support from both district and national structures of NUP, weakening the strong position he once held.

Adding to his challenges, none of the local councilor candidates he supported passed the vetting stages. This is in stark contrast to Mathias Walukaga’s candidates, most of whom were successful, giving the Buganda music icon turned Mayor a significant grassroots victory. Walukaga’s camp is reportedly celebrating its growing dominance across the constituency.

Despite this setback, Ssegona is reportedly refusing to back down. “He believes the party has betrayed him after all he’s done,” one insider said. Others, however, caution that politics is ultimately about public support, not past achievements, suggesting that Ssegona’s personal record may not be enough to secure his place in NUP.

Speculation is rising that Ssegona could run as an independent candidate, relying on his personal popularity and long-standing connections in Busiro East. Another possibility is that he might join the Democratic Front, a new party associated with his ally Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of Opposition.

The vetting process in Busiro East has revealed internal tensions within NUP, shifting loyalties, and the emergence of new power brokers like Walukaga. His increasing influence, both within the party and among grassroots supporters, signals a potential generational and strategic shift in the constituency.

For now, Ssegona remains tight-lipped, leaving observers to speculate about his next move. His political future may depend on whether he accepts NUP’s decision or challenges it through independent or alternative party channels. The coming weeks are expected to define the balance of power in Busiro East ahead of the 2026 elections.
