“Who Ever Thought That I Will Step Down From Representing Kampala Is Dreaming” Lukwago Tells Off Ham Kiggundu As He Drops His Presidential Bid To Recontest For Kampala Mayor
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has officially announced that he is stepping down from his presidential bid to focus on recontesting as Mayor of Kampala City. Speaking to the press, Lukwago sent a firm message to those who believed he would retreat from active politics in the capital.
“Whoever thought that I will step down from representing Kampala is dreaming,” Lukwago said. He warned tycoons like Ham Kiggundu and others who may be backing challengers that he is not stepping aside and remains committed to leading the city.
Lukwago accused some Kampala tycoons of supporting opposition candidates, including Eng. Balimwezo of the NUP, in an effort to unseat him as Mayor. He claimed to have reliable information about their involvement and assured that their attempts would fail.
The Lord Mayor highlighted his long-standing experience and resilience, pointing to the personal risks he has endured while serving Kampala. “I have suffered a lot, to the point of security tearing my clothes apart. Even if it is Gen. Museveni standing as Lord Mayor, I will defeat him badly,” he declared.
Addressing Ham Kiggundu directly, Lukwago said, “When Ham Kiggundu sees Lukwago, he wishes me only death. But I want to assure him that I am here to stay. I am the only true opposition in Kampala.” His remarks reinforced his determination to retain control of the city.

Lukwago’s decision to abandon his presidential ambitions and concentrate on Kampala comes ahead of the 2026 general elections. Analysts suggest that this move may consolidate his support base and send a clear message to political and business figures attempting to challenge him.
As the campaign for Kampala Mayor intensifies, Lukwago’s stance is clear: he will not be intimidated and is committed to representing the people of Kampala. His critics and rivals have been put on notice that the Lord Mayor is ready to fight fiercely to retain his position.
