Tension gripped Rwengoma Beneficiation Center in Ntungamo District on the early morning of 7th October 2025, after a police officer allegedly went on a violent rampage while under the influence of alcohol. The shocking incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. in Nyakinombe Village, leaving residents terrified.

According to a police report by ASP Odong Tobia, Zonal Commander of the Mineral Police in the Ankole Region, the suspect, identified as Police Constable (PC) Ochola Joe, No. 68349, is attached to the Field Force Unit (FFU) Rwizi Region. He was on special duty at Rwengoma Beneficiation Center as part of an ongoing operation against illegal mining and mineral smuggling.

Instead of performing his duties, PC Ochola reportedly consumed excessive alcohol and later picked up his rifle, gun number 564810779. He then proceeded to a nearby funeral gathering in Nyakinombe Village, where he fired live bullets into the air. Witnesses described chaotic scenes as mourners and residents panicked and fled for safety.

The report further indicates that after the shooting, PC Ochola allegedly set up an illegal roadblock and stopped a vehicle with registration number UDJ 592U. He reportedly robbed the driver of 1,000 shillings, turning the incident from a drunken disturbance into a serious case of attempted murder and aggravated robbery.

Police investigations confirmed that the officer fired seven bullets, though no cartridges were recovered at the scene. He was later disarmed and arrested by his fellow officers before causing further harm. Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) from Ntungamo documented the area, and statements were collected from key witnesses.

The District Police Commander (DPC) of Ntungamo was immediately informed, and PC Ochola is now detained at Ntungamo Central Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities have assured the public that the suspect will face appropriate charges once inquiries are complete.

The Uganda Police Force condemned the officer’s actions, stressing that such indiscipline will not be tolerated. They also commended the swift response of officers who apprehended the suspect and prevented further danger.

Residents expressed relief that calm was restored, though many remain shaken by the events. Police continue to urge all officers to maintain discipline and professionalism, especially when handling sensitive operations within communities.
