Sarah Mwangi shared her experience of meeting a man on Facebook, leading to a whirlwind romance and a self-financed wedding.

Sarah recounted that after talking to the man on the phone following their Facebook chat, they met for a face-to-face meeting in April 2023.  After the dowry ceremony followed in July of the same year, the couple got married in September, and their marriage lasted a week.

You meet a man on Facebook and fall completely in love with him; you finance your own wedding as the woman with the hope that his financial situation will improve, but exactly a week after the colourful ceremony, you break up.  Whereas we would all love this to be a scene from the movie Fatal Attraction, it is a reality that Sarah Mwangi from Kirinyaga has lived painfully and is still reeling from the shock of the traumatic marriage.

“Looking back, everything was so rushed,” Sarah reflected on their swift journey from meeting to marriage.

The man introduced her to his parents on their first face-to-face encounter, and discussions of marriage ensued early on. Within two months, both families were involved, setting the stage for a speedy wedding. However, cracks began to show as the relationship progressed. A week before their planned dowry ceremony, Sarah’s pastor’s meeting with the man was nearly thwarted, signaling the beginning of troubling behavior. Despite Sarah’s efforts, including paying for his transportation, doubts started to emerge.

“He was set to meet my pastor a week before our dowry ceremony. However, on that day, he nearly failed to come. We waited for him all day, and I had to make endless calls to him when it reached late in the afternoon, and I realised he was not planning to come,” she told TUKO.

The wedding preparations revealed deeper issues. Sarah found herself footing the bill for essentials like the man’s suit, her gown, and even their honeymoon accommodation. Despite initial joy on their wedding day, tensions resurfaced during their honeymoon when the man accused Sarah of infidelity.

“On the day after our wedding, on a Sunday as were on our honeymoon, he started claiming that I mentioned some men in my sleep and demanded to know what they meant to me. He questioned why I had also opened up to some friends about his financial situation,” the woman narrated.

Their marital bliss was short-lived as conflicts escalated upon returning home. Arguments turned violent, with the man’s erratic behavior escalating to threats with a knife. The situation reached a breaking point exactly a week after their wedding, when he posed a serious threat to Sarah’s son.The following Saturday marked exactly one week since they exchanged their vows, and it was on this day that chaos erupted.

After a heated argument the night before, she reached out to her mother for help in mediating the situation. However, soon after her mother left, the situation escalated dangerously when the man, in a fit of rage, nearly harmed her son from a previous relationship.

“Once my mother left in the morning after trying to calm things down, I went to take a shower. He barged into the bathroom, demanding intimacy. I asked him to wait, explaining that my son was still at home watching TV,” she recounted.

Despite her pleas to wait until her son was out of the house, the man threatened to harm the boy with a table. True to his word, he grabbed the glass table from the living room, but it shattered, injuring him instead of the boy. After seeking medical attention, the woman summoned her mother, pastor, and the couple who had witnessed their wedding. Together, they decided that the man should return to his parents’ home due to the violence he had caused.

“Yet, I’ve been living in constant fear. He continues to threaten my life, showing up at my door at all hours of the night. I feel trapped. I later discovered he has another wife, who warned me never to return to him,” she revealed.

The woman has reported the incidents to the police and hopes for a swift resolution to her divorce proceedings.Following a traumatic incident, involving the man’s injury from a broken glass table, Sarah sought help from family, friends, and authorities. Despite ongoing threats from the man, she remains determined to pursue a divorce and regain her sense of safety.
