The United States has issued a stern warning to Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, following a series of social media posts targeting US Ambassador William Popp.

General Muhoozi gave Ambassador Popp an ultimatum to issue a personal apology to his father, President Museveni, by Monday at 9 am, accusing the ambassador of undiplomatic behavior and disrespecting the president.

The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee responded swiftly, cautioning General Muhoozi that any further provocation would be “very problematic” and met with “a serious response” . The committee emphasized that the US Ambassador and the US mission in Uganda engage with the Ugandan government on a non-partisan basis to foster stronger ties between the American and Ugandan people.

“Any further confrontation will be very problematic & met with a serious response,” the committee stated, clarifying that the US Ambassador and the US mission in Uganda engage with the Ugandan government on a non-partisan basis to foster stronger ties between the American and Ugandan people.

The root cause of General Muhoozi’s online tirade remains unclear, but speculation suggests it may have been triggered by an alleged letter from Ambassador Popp advising President Museveni against seeking re-election in 2026 due to concerns about Uganda’s stability and the broader region.

Sanctions Imposed on Ugandan Police Officers

In a separate development, the US government imposed sanctions on four Ugandan police officers – Bob Kagarura, Alex Mwine, Elly Womanya, and Hamdani Twesigye – over human rights violations, including torture and inhumane treatment. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to upholding justice and accountability for human rights violations worldwide, including denying travel visas to individuals with a record of abuse.

US-Uganda Relations

President Museveni, once a vital ally to the West for regional security, has indicated his interest in extending his presidency beyond its current 40-year span. General Muhoozi had previously signaled a desire to succeed his father but has recently called on his supporters to back Museveni’s continued rule.

The US Embassy in Uganda reiterated its commitment to working with Ugandan authorities on a broad array of issues.

Meanwhile Ugandan General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni, has deleted a series of controversial tweets threatening the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, William Popp, just a day after issuing them.

In the now-deleted posts, Muhoozi accused Ambassador Popp of disrespecting his father and undermining the Ugandan Constitution, giving the ambassador an ultimatum to apologize to Museveni by 9 a.m. on Monday or face expulsion from Uganda. The posts, which caused a stir on social media and drew widespread attention, have since been removed without explanation.
