Budyebo County MP Bernard Kirya Sekyanzi shocked residents in his constituency on Thursday, revealing his phone was stolen during a meeting at State House in Entebbe.

The astonishing disclosure came during a land baraza meeting in Nakayoza Village, Lwabiyata Sub County, Nakasongola District.Sekyanzi, alongside Lands Minister Sam Mayanja, addressed ongoing land disputes in the area, telling over 300 residents and local leaders that he had gathered substantial evidence on land grabbing and wrangles in Budyebo Constituency and Nakasongola District. This critical information was stored electronically on his phone.

“I always believed that State House was the safest place, but I was surprised when my treasured smartphone was stolen from me while attending the meeting,” Sekyanzi said.

He expressed uncertainty about how or when the theft occurred, hinting at foul play.Sekyanzi suggested the theft might have been orchestrated by individuals with vested interests in land grabbing. However, he assured his constituents that the so-called “land-grabbing mafia” would not succeed despite the theft.

He had wisely kept a backup of all information on a private flash drive securely stored in his bedroom. The land baraza focused on a dispute involving 17 square miles of land covering Lwabiyata, Nabiswera and Wabinyonyi Sub Counties.

Previously managed by the National Forestry Authority (NFA), this land was allocated to landless people under a presidential directive. However, settlers now face threats of eviction from powerful individuals.Sekyanzi referred to these individuals as members of a “wealthy and untouchable Mafia group,” led by Charles Okuru, Molly Auma, Janet Akello, Amos Mbazira and Amos Matama.

The conflict pits this faction against local residents led by Ausi Kizza.Minister Sam Mayanja proposed several solutions to resolve the dispute, prioritizing protection for those with legitimate claims against unlawful evictions.

The meeting aimed to discuss and propose solutions to widespread land disputes in Nakasongola. The theft of Sekyanzi’s phone raises concerns about security at State House and the extent of land grabbing in Nakasongola District. With Sekyanzi’s backup evidence, the fight against land grabbing continues.
