Barbara Itungo Kyagulanyi, widely recognized as Barbie Kyagulanyi, is a celebrated Ugandan author, philanthropist, and activist known for her commitment to social justice and empowerment. Born on September 7, 1984, in Ntungamo District, South Western Uganda, she is the daughter of Dr. Gershom Kagaju and Joy Kagaju.

Barbie began her education at St. Helen’s Primary School in Nyamitanga, Mbarara, and later attended Bweranyangi Girls’ Senior Secondary School in Bushenyi, completing her O and A levels. Her passion for social causes led her to Makerere University, where she earned a degree in Social Work and Social Administration. In 2021, she furthered her education by obtaining a master’s degree in Human Rights from the University of London.

During her high school years, Barbie met Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, famously known as Bobi Wine, who was then studying Music, Dance, and Drama at Makerere University. Their decade-long relationship culminated in marriage at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala in August 2011. The couple has four children: Solomon Kampala, Shalom Namagembe, Mbogo Shadrack, and Nakayi Suubi.

In 2012, Barbie published her autobiography, Golden Memories of a Village Belle, which chronicles her childhood and experiences growing up in rural Uganda. Her dedication to social causes inspired her to establish Caring Hearts Uganda in 2013. This NGO focuses on empowering adolescent girls, promoting HIV/AIDS awareness, and advancing menstrual hygiene management. Through this initiative, Barbie has improved the lives of marginalized and displaced children, providing essential resources and infrastructure.

Barbie has been a steadfast supporter of her husband’s political journey, actively participating in his campaigns for parliamentary and presidential positions. She has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights, mobilizing grassroots support and standing firm during challenging times, including Bobi Wine’s legal and political struggles.
