Just In!! Retired Major John Kazoora Dies After Long Illness

Uganda is mourning the death of retired Major John Kazoora, a revered soldier, politician, and outspoken patriot who passed away after a prolonged illness. Known for his unflinching honesty and deep love for country, Kazoora’s life was defined by service, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to truth.

Born in the hills of Mbarara District, Kazoora’s path to national prominence began in the crucible of conflict. He joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) during the 1980–1986 Bush War, playing a key role in the struggle that brought President Yoweri Museveni to power. His discipline and strategic acumen, especially in the Mityana–Mubende zone, earned him the rank of Major.

Following the war, he transitioned into public administration, serving as Special District Administrator and later contributing to internal security efforts. But it was in politics that Kazoora truly made his mark.

Elected to Parliament in 1996 to represent Kashari County, he quickly gained a reputation for boldness and candor. Unafraid to challenge authority, Kazoora became a vocal advocate for transparency and democracy. As a founding member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), he was instrumental in promoting multi-party politics during a time when dissent was dangerous and costly.

Outspoken and principled, Kazoora never shied away from criticizing the very government he had helped to install. His 2012 autobiography, Betrayed by My Leader, was a searing critique of the post-liberation political establishment, echoing the frustrations of many NRA veterans who felt abandoned. More than a personal memoir, it was a mirror held up to a nation still wrestling with its promises and failures.

Despite facing political backlash and periods of isolation, Kazoora remained deeply engaged in Uganda’s civic life. Even as his health declined, he continued to mentor emerging leaders and offer sharp, insightful political commentary.

Major Kazoora’s death marks the passing of more than just a soldier or politician—it is the silencing of a voice that dared to speak truth to power. He bore the scars of war and the weight of peace, guided always by a belief in justice and national progress.

He leaves behind family, comrades, and a country still grappling with many of the very issues he spent his life confronting. As Uganda lays him to rest, his legacy of courage, conviction, and integrity will endure.

A true son of the soil, a fighter for freedom—gone, but never forgotten.
