Just In!! Senior UPDF Officer Arrested in Shocking Car Robbery Incident in Western Uganda
In a development that has sent shockwaves through both the public and security circles, a senior officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has been arrested in connection with a violent car robbery in Sheema District.
Major Various Matomi Oyesiga, commander of the 309 Brigade based in Rubirizi District, was taken into custody along with two alleged accomplices. The trio is accused of assaulting a man and stealing his vehicle.
Police reports indicate that the victim, identified as Apollo Kansiime, was attacked in Migina, Kagongo, where he was reportedly beaten before his Toyota Premio (registration number UAL 692Y) was taken. The incident occurred on Saturday morning and prompted a swift response from law enforcement.
Following the attack, investigators traced the suspects to Kabwohe Town, where they discovered the stolen car parked outside a local bar. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a loaded AK-47 rifle, marked with serial number UG UPDF 56030424—raising concerns about the use of military equipment in the crime.
“This is a deeply concerning case, not just because of the violence involved but also due to the alleged participation of a senior UPDF officer,” a police source told Spyreports. “We anticipate charges of aggravated assault and robbery.”
Maj. Oyesiga and the other suspects are currently being held at Sheema Police Station as investigations continue. The case has sparked renewed debate about accountability within the armed forces and the potential misuse of military resources.
Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation, emphasizing that no individual is above the law regardless of their rank or position. The UPDF has yet to release an official statement regarding the arrest.
This case highlights the urgent need for greater oversight within security agencies, particularly when those tasked with upholding the law are implicated in serious criminal activities.
