In an interview with UPDF Spokesperson Felix Kulayigye, Museveni praised Muhoozi’s leadership qualities, attributing them to his dedication to upholding the legacy of Uganda’s military heroes.

Museveni noted that Muhoozi’s recent efforts to commemorate fallen commanders are rooted in his deep understanding of Uganda’s historical struggle for development.

Reflecting on the memorial event organised by Gen. Muhoozi for the late Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, President Museveni said, “I think the CDF is doing the right thing to capture the history of the forces, and it is part of patriotism because if you don’t appreciate the people who contributed, then how will the ones of today and tomorrow be encouraged?”

The first memorial service for Gen. Aronda, a former CDF, was held on September 10th, marking the beginning of a series of events aimed at honouring former UPDF commanders.Museveni stressed the importance of recognising such contributions, as it helps to foster a culture of sacrifice among the current and future generations in the military.

Muhoozi’s approach, according to Museveni, is in line with patriotism and appreciation for those who have shaped the UPDF’s history.

Museveni added, “If your line is ‘out of sight, out of mind,’ how will you build a culture of sacrifice? It is a good initiative, and I am happy to hear that your new CDF has brought up this culture.”

Gen. Muhoozi, currently serves as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) after his appointment on March 21, 2024. Since joining the UPDF to combat threats posed by groups like the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), Muhoozi has climbed the ranks to become Uganda’s 13th CDF.

He succeeded Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi and has set his agenda to enhance the professionalism of the army, curb corruption, and improve the welfare of soldiers within the UPDF.

History Connection

During his time as a leader in the forces, he initiated efforts to name different military barracks after prominent African figures like Julius Nyerere and Samora Machel.Museveni explained that Muhoozi’s connection to the history of the struggle has influenced these actions.

“Maybe it is because he grew up in the struggle, that may be the reason,” Museveni said.

Aronda, who passed away in 2015, was known for his role as the Chief of Defence Forces before transitioning to serve as the Minister of Internal Affairs.

His contributions to Uganda’s military history have been widely recognised, making his memorial a significant occasion for the UPDF and the country at large.
