Parliament Speaker Anita Among has vowed to cover the education expenses of Aliyah Nagirinya, the daughter of the late Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. This announcement was made during a special parliamentary session held on Friday morning to honor Ssegirinya, who passed away the previous day after battling a prolonged illness8.

Addressing the grieving family and lawmakers, Among expressed her commitment, stating, “Let’s contribute individually. For me, I can take up one kid and educate her in my school. After this, look for me, and I will take up one kid. I will pay your fees, and I will take you to my school.” Her pledge encompasses Aliyah’s education from high school through university, offering crucial support to the family during this challenging time.

Ssegirinya, known for his advocacy for marginalized communities, faced many hardships, including a two-year imprisonment that significantly impacted his health. His passing has left a deep void in Uganda’s political scene and has prompted widespread mourning. The special session, which saw participation from MPs across the political spectrum, paid tribute to Ssegirinya’s steadfast dedication to justice and equality.
