Mpigi Choked: Holiday Traffic Chaos Forces Major Route Diversions
Motorists in Mpigi faced unprecedented delays today, 30th December 2025, as heavy traffic snarled the main highway connecting Kampala and Masaka. Authorities say the congestion is among the worst seen this holiday season.
Uganda Traffic Police reported that vehicles were moving at a crawl, with some areas nearly at a standstill. Commuters returning to the capital or traveling to southern towns were caught in hours-long delays.
In response, traffic officials quickly implemented alternative routes to ease congestion. SP Michael Kananura, Community Liaison Officer at the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, announced the new traffic management plan.
Motorists heading to Kampala are being redirected through the Kasanje–Nakawuka road, a move intended to reduce pressure on the main Mpigi highway. Officers on the ground are guiding vehicles to ensure smooth passage.
Travelers going from Kampala to Masaka are now advised to use the Gomba–Sembabule route. Traffic personnel have been deployed along this route to assist drivers and manage the flow efficiently.
SP Kananura urged motorists to follow all instructions from traffic officers. He stressed that compliance is key to safety and to prevent further delays on both the main and diversion routes.
While some drivers expressed frustration at the unexpected delays, many appreciated the swift action taken by authorities to provide alternative routes. Local businesses along the bypass roads reported a noticeable increase in traffic as commuters adjusted their routes.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, warning motorists to exercise patience, drive safely, and allow extra travel time until traffic normalizes. They also encouraged travelers to stay updated on road conditions through official channels.
