President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Major General Don Nabasa as the new Joint Staff Policy and Strategy at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs. This appointment signals a significant step in General Nabasa’s career, following his successful tenure as the leader of the 3rd Infantry Division, where he earned praise for his effective leadership.

General Nabasa succeeds Major General Bob Ogik, who has been reassigned as the Defence Attaché in Turkey. Along with this transition, Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma has been promoted to command the 3rd Infantry Division, while Colonel Allan Kyangungu, previously head of the 407 Brigade in Nakapiripirit, will now serve as the Deputy Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division. The handover ceremony, presided over by Lieutenant General Muhanga Kayanja, Commander of the Land Forces, was attended by various leaders from the Karamoja region, underscoring the military’s emphasis on collaboration with local communities.

During his time with the 3rd Infantry Division, Major General Nabasa played a pivotal role in improving security in the Karamoja region, which has been plagued by challenges such as cattle raiding and arms smuggling. He prioritized working with local communities to encourage voluntary disarmament through dialogue, promoting trust and understanding about the benefits of laying down arms. This approach reduced the reliance on force and fostered positive relationships between the military and the community.

As Brigadier General Sserunkuma and Colonel Kyangungu step into their new roles, they are expected to continue the initiatives spearheaded by General Nabasa. Local leaders have expressed optimism that the new commanders will focus on addressing security issues, curbing arms smuggling across borders, and strengthening ties with the communities they serve.

These leadership changes reflect President Museveni’s dedication to bolstering Uganda’s national defence by appointing experienced leaders to key positions. With the new team in place, there is renewed hope for sustained progress and stability in regions that have long faced security challenges.
