On December 10th of last year, the court scheduled a return date for Dr. Kiiza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajj Obed Kamuregeya, to appear on January 7th, 2025, at the military court martial sitting in Makindye. This marked the return of the court’s activities after a brief pause.

In a positive development for Besigye, the Uganda Law Council issued a temporary practicing license to their lead counsel, Kenyan politician Martha Wangari Karua, who was also present in court that day. Karua had reapplied for the license on December 23, 2024, after her initial application had been rejected on several grounds.

However, the proceedings took an unexpected turn when Eron Kiiza, a hardliner lawyer known for his vocal and tough defense in the General Court Martial on Besigye’s defense team, was arrested and added to the dock alongside his clients. This caused significant disruption in the courtroom, prompting a brief adjournment of 30 minutes. The adjournment allowed the military to address the commotion, as Besigye’s supporters and lawyers were left in a state of shock and confusion.
