We Shall Not Allow That Nonsense!! Uganda Law Society Responds Regarding The Jailing Of Eron Kiiza
Human rights advocate Agather Atuthaire has announced a comprehensive strategy to challenge the controversial sentencing of lawyer Eron Kiiza by the General Court Martial.
Speaking on behalf of concerned legal practitioners and civil society groups, Atuthaire condemned the nine-month jail sentence that was imposed on Kiiza for alleged contempt of court, describing it as a gross abuse of power. She vowed to pursue justice through a combination of legal action, media campaigns, and public advocacy.
Atuthaire outlined several approaches to address not only Kiiza’s detention but also the broader concerns surrounding Uganda’s judicial system. She mentioned that a group of lawyers is already working on legal avenues to contest the sentence. In addition, she expressed plans to leverage online platforms and media advocacy to highlight what she described as systemic abuses within the judicial system and to mobilize citizens in support of their cause.
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) is also organizing peaceful protests involving lawyers and members of the public to express their dissatisfaction with Kiiza’s detention and sentencing. These protests will also challenge the trial of civilians in military courts, which Atuthaire pointed out as unconstitutional, referencing the decisions of the Constitutional Court.
Atuthaire further criticized the Judiciary for failing to resolve critical cases, such as the appeal in Kabaziguruka, which could have potentially prevented the current judicial crisis. She emphasized that the Judiciary’s inaction has contributed to the ongoing quagmire. This announcement represents a significant challenge for President Museveni’s government, as the legal community and civil society unite to demand greater accountability. The planned protests are expected to increase pressure on the government, with advocates calling for the protection of constitutional rights, judicial independence, and the rule of law in Uganda.
